Bikers need you – look twice, save a life

We’re all in this together. Someone is counting on you to keep your eyes on the road and on the traffic around you. That premise stands no matter how many wheels you have under you.

In May we typically see an increase in both motorcyclists and bicyclists taking advantage of warmer Iowa weather. While adding these vehicles happens about this time every year, it still takes some of us a little while to train ourselves to watch for these smaller vehicles.

If you ride, you know the freedom you can feel on two wheels. Safe biking, whether on a motorcycle or bicycle, takes balance, coordination, and good judgment. Scan your surroundings. Watching out for others is your responsibility, too.

For 2018, there have been 85 fatalities reported. That’s an increase of four since last Monday. To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to the daily fatality report at https://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/stats/daily.pdf
