Brackets Bust – Belts won’t

Chances are your NCAA men’s basketball tournament bracket suffered some serious hits over the weekend. We’re not getting any prizes for our bracket either.

So if you can’t count on your bracket, what can you count on? Your seat belt won’t fail you. Oh, sure many of us have had someone tell us their father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate died because they were wearing a seat belt in a crash, but the data simply doesn’t show much truth to the assertion that you’re safer unbuckled. Statistics show people not wearing seat belts are 30 time more likely to be ejected in a crash, and three out of four people who are ejected die from their injuries.

So far this year 13 of the 40 people who have died on Iowa’s highways were unbuckled. While it is true that some crashes are so horrific that seat belts wouldn’t have made a difference, isn’t it worth 3 seconds of your time to give yourself a better chance at survival?

The fatality count of 53 is an increase of five since last Monday. Preliminary number show that in all of 2016, 403 people were killed on Iowa highways. To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to
