Message Monday

Have some class, stay off my bumper

We get it, you have a schedule to keep. Maybe the kids need to be picked up or you are running late to school or a meeting. But one of the less-than-positive messages you’re sending when you drive aggressively is that you’re the most important person in the world and your time is more valuable than anyone else’s time.

Tailgating is just one aggressive behavior. Frequent or unsafe lane changes, failing to use your signal or yield to other vehicles and trying to beat a yellow light are a few others.

It’s easy to use the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives impact the way we drive. But when you think about it rationally, is saving a couple of minutes driving in this manner worth risking your life of the life of another driver?

Some states have ways to report aggressive drivers and even have databases tracking them, which may result in a visit from a law enforcement officer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8wPhc8YjsI. Iowa isn’t one of those states. However, a list of aggressive drivers is still one no one wants to end up on.

For 2018, there have been 22 fatalities reported. The 2017 fatality stands at 332. This is subject to change as law enforcement reports are completed. To see statistics published daily by the Office of Driver Services, go to the daily fatality report at https://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/stats/daily.pdf
